The apparel chain Forever 21 faces potential federal fines of $236,500 for alleged workplace safety violations at stores in Paramus and Manhattan.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the Paramus store had obstructed exit routes; a fire extinguisher that was not mounted and readily accessible; material that was stored in a way that did not guard against sliding or collapse; and fluorescent lights that were not covered to prevent accidental contact or breakage. According to the Forever21 website, the store is in Westfield Garden State Plaza.

Inspectors also issued citations to the Manhattan store for two violations, obstructed exit routes and fluorescent lights with no covers.

“It is unacceptable for Forever 21 to continue repeating these violations, which are common among retailers, and put workers at serious risk,” Robert Kulick, OSHA’s regional administrator in New York, said in a statement. “Retail managers have a legal responsibility to inspect their stores, identify potential hazards and quickly eliminate them to ensure worker safety and health.”
